At the beginning of 2022 artists Lucy Suggate and Charlie Ford began collaborating during a residency at Wainsgate Dances, the residency brought Charlie's drawing, image and object making practices into orbit with Lucy’s dance research. This encounter creates an alchemical and uncanny effect, by bringing together the simple and humble materials of pencil and paper, to create and explore the transformative properties of stone. During the performance they construct paper stones to access the imagination and play with illusions of time, weight and tenderness. The work is a very small attempt to draw our attention towards expansive states of awareness and attention by physically embodying qualities of petrification, tenderness, heaviness and strength, creating a type of stone-time and calcific bodies.
Explaining the genesis of the work Lucy says: As a dance artist I am curious about all ways that movement exists, arrives and departs the body. During the pandemic/lockdown I was thrown into different sensations of time and body, where (for me) nothing and everything changed. Of course it was a vast and complex landscape of individual and collective experiences and like many I am grateful to have made it somewhere, to emerge/re-submerge and reflect alongside the changes made by such compressive experiences, domestically, socially, physically, biologically, economically and politically. I know I’m not unique in any way for feeling the unbearable weight and the unfathomable loss. I was and I still am feeling petrified, I feel it mostly on a bodily level, it’s not necessarily a bad thing…but it is a thing. I can no longer move the way I did, the spirit, gravity and grace I once channelled has turned to stone, into types of chronic-ness (crisis, stiffness, fatigue, pain) that were always present, mostly softened by a thin layer of moss. Now I’m trying to understand how I can move with my stoney-ness, not to solve it, but to be it.

MOTH NIGHT
FRIDAY 14 JULY
EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO POOR WEATHER: MOTH NIGHT WITH HEBNAT
We are lucky to have a fantastic variety of moths in our valleys of all shapes, sizes and colours: green, gold, silver, blue, and some as large as your hand!
Sadly we're not so lucky with the weather and Friday evening is set to be too windy and wet to run the live stream event.
We're working with HebNat www.hebnat.org.uk to develop a web page about moths to share with you in lieu of the event, and in the meantime you can explore the Android Moth App developed by Richard Rainbow of HebNat which is now available to download.

JULES BLAINE DAVIS: THE KITCHEN HEALER
SUNDAY 16 JULY
JULES BLAINE DAVIS: THE KITCHEN HEALER IN CONVERSATION WITH JAVA BERE
WATERFRONT HALL, THE TOWN HALL, ST GEORGE'S ST, HEBDEN BRIDGE, HX7 7BY
4.30PM START (DOORS 4.10PM) | £7/£5 | BOOKS SIGNED AFTER THE EVENT
BOOK
"The world is changing, and I am in the kitchen roasting carrots with olive oil, salt, and love. The silver kettle is just beginning to steam, and a glass vat of sage honey awaits the dip of my Grandma Lena’s long, golden spoon.” ― Jules Blaine Davis
The kitchens we grew up with set the template for how we nourish ourselves today. It is in the kitchen that we learn to create, feed, connect, grieve, taste, long, and love. Look at your relationship with your kitchen, and you uncover the unconscious recipe guiding your life.
With The Kitchen Healer, Jules Blaine Davis invites women to find greater nourishment in body and soul by deepening their relationships with the hearth of the home, the kitchen. Though the book contains recipes ― with ingredients both traditional and emotional ― this is not a cookbook. This is a book about cooking up the life we deeply long to live. Davis believes that how we were or weren’t nourished in our childhood kitchens shapes every aspect of our lives today, and it is through the kitchen that we may find healing from the stress, trauma, guilt, and overwhelm that so many of us carry through our lives. Through heartfelt guidance and photographs that perfectly capture the love and chaos our kitchens contain, Davis shows us that by making the kitchen the centerpiece of our homes, we are nourished far beyond food and cooking.
Come and join Jules at her first book event on her European tour, as she chats with Java Bere, writer, illustrator and table stylist.
