ENGAGING NEIGHBOURHOODS: 2024
In 2024, our Engaging Neighbourhoods project entered its fourth year, expanding from three to nine community partnerships across Calderdale. As part of The Man Who Planted Trees project, we delivered 43 creative workshops and a nature-based volunteering day, engaging 452 people across Cornholme, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Halifax, Rastrick, and Elland.
Our project engaged 9 community groups—4 youth-focused and 5 adult-focused—providing them with up to 7 artist-led sessions.
Highlights include:
CALDERDALE YOUNG CARERS SERVICE: 11 young carers participated in drama workshops, becoming part of our youth cast, with full support including transport, food, and costumes.
WOMENCENTRE, HALIFAX: Over 6 weeks, members worked with artist Sandra McCracken to create props and masks for the performance.
PROJECT COLT, ELLAND: Members created set designs and props with artist Jonny Quick. The centre also hosted a two-week art exhibition in July.
THE SPACE COMMUNITY HUB, RASTRICK: A 6-week course and a writing workshop with Amanda Dalton led to theatrical creations for the performance, culminating in a Community Creative Day in June.
CALDER COMMUNITY CARES, CORNHOLME: The Lionesses peer support group co-hosted a Community Creative Day in Todmorden, contributing to mask and prop-making for the performance.
TIME OUT CALDERDALE: Youngsters aged 8-16 took part in drama workshops with director Andy Barry, contributing to our youth community cast and performances.
ST AUGUSTINE'S CENTRE, HALIFAX: Sanctuary seekers participated in creative workshops and a volunteer day with ForUsTree, culminating in a performance with their families in the audience.
HALIFAX OPPORTUNITIES TRUST - TODMORDEN & PELLON'S CHILDREN CENTRE: Early years children created artwork that was displayed in our exhibition, brightening the walls of their nurseries.
RASTRICK HIGH SCHOOL: Year 9 and 10 students crafted slipware jugs with ceramic artist Katie Bates, with work showcased in the Elland exhibition. Students also joined our community chorus.
This year, we’ve seen incredible collaboration and creativity across Calderdale, empowering people of all ages and backgrounds to engage, create, and perform together.
